When Vine FX was brought on to contribute graphics for a single sequence in Disney’s The Amateur, the scope of work quickly evolved. Following a productive early call with the film’s VFX supervisor and creative leads, the team’s initial concept board expanded into a suite of designs that helped define the visual identity of the film’s technological world.

Led by CG Supervisor and Head of Graphics Tim Kilgour, this project marked the establishment of Vine FX’s dedicated graphics department. The team was tasked with developing screen graphics and interface designs that supported the story without distracting from it — blending aesthetics with function. The challenge was to create visuals that felt advanced, intuitive, and consistent across different in-film systems such as CIA operations, tracking environments, and communications.

The goal was to produce interfaces that were visually dynamic but narratively efficient. Motion, colour, and rhythm were used strategically to guide viewer attention and support key story beats. Rather than defaulting to conventional visual tropes, the team took inspiration from modern 3D rendering tools, real-world UI/UX practices, and subtle AI-driven behaviour to create screens that felt integrated and plausible. The result was a suite of distinct visual languages that remained cohesive across multiple environments.

Vine FX maintained close collaboration with ILM throughout the production, ensuring smooth integration of the graphics into final shots. Internally, the graphics and compositing departments worked in tandem, allowing for quick iteration and adaptability as the editorial needs evolved. This cross-department workflow was instrumental in delivering over 130 VFX shots on schedule, with consistent quality.

The screen graphics not only served their intended functional role but also featured prominently throughout the film, including in its promotional materials. The project demonstrated Vine FX’s ability to scale up quickly, manage complex creative requirements, and collaborate effectively with both internal teams and external partners.

As a result of this work, Vine FX has established a scalable and dedicated screen graphics pipeline, positioning the studio to support future high-end film and television projects requiring integrated visual design.
