Disney and National Geographic’s 'Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston' explores the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, bringing to life the events that engulfed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Presented by Tom Hiddleston, the documentary combines historical insight with dramatic reconstruction to reveal the devastating power of the eruption and its lasting impact.
Vine FX delivered a range of visual effects to help recreate the scale and intensity of the disaster. Central to the work was the creation of a fully CG volcano, supported by complex FX simulations of billowing smoke and fast-moving pyroclastic flows. Extensive digital matte painting (DMP) work was used to build and enhance environments, establishing the scale and atmosphere of the eruption and its impact on the surrounding landscape.
The team also completed detailed tracking, roto, clean-up and compositing work, seamlessly integrating the CG elements, simulations and environment enhancements with the live-action photography. Together, these elements helped create a convincing and immersive visual portrayal of one of history’s most devastating natural disasters.
